Charm®, Australia’s leading oncology information management system, has won the ‘Safety and Quality’ category at the 2025 WA Health Excellence Awards. This achievement celebrates a transformative project that is redefining cancer care across Western Australia.
The award recognises the Charm Oncology Management System Project, delivered in partnership with South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) and WA Country Health Service (WACHS). Their vision to implement Charm® across 11 cancer treatment units has created a safer, more connected, and patient-centered oncology service statewide.
A Vision for Safer Cancer Care
Before Charm®, fragmented paper-based systems posed significant risks, contributing to eight SAC1 clinical incidents between 2016 and 2022 – events that could have caused serious harm or death. SMHS and WACHS responded decisively, introducing Charm® to replace legacy workflows with a shared digital platform that integrates prescribing, scheduling, verification, preparation, and administration.
Charm® is now live across all SMHS and WACHS sites, with full rollout completed this month following Northam’s go-live. This milestone marks a major step forward in reducing clinical risk, improving patient outcomes, and modernizing cancer care delivery across metropolitan and regional WA.
Putting Patients First
Charm® is designed to support safer, smarter, and more compassionate cancer care. Its capabilities include:
- Real-time access to patient data across locations and devices
- Standardised treatment protocols and decision support tools
- Streamlined pharmacy workflows with one-click ordering and tracking
- Reduced medication errors and transcription risks
- Enhanced auditing and clinical governance capabilities
These features ensure timely delivery of medications, reduce wait times, and enable better collaboration between clinicians, pharmacists, and nurses, placing patients and their carers at the center of their health journey.
Behind the Transformation
Margot Mason, Magentus APAC Head of Clinical Services, said:
“Winning this award is a testament to the power of Charm® to transform cancer care. We’re proud to support health services across Australia with technology that improves safety, strengthens collaboration, and puts patients first.”
Michele Blanshard, Managing Director of Magentus Practice Management and Oncology, added:
“The continued rollout of Charm® across SMHS and WACHS demonstrates how digital innovation can deliver better patient outcomes. By bringing oncology care teams together on a single platform, we are improving communication, reducing clinical risk, and ensuring more supportive care for patients.”
A Statewide Commitment to Excellence
From busy metropolitan hospitals to regional sites spanning more than 2.5 million square kilometers, Charm® is enabling clinicians to securely access real-time patient information, improving care coordination and workflow efficiencies. This award underscores WA Health’s commitment to equitable, high-quality cancer care closer to home for every patient.
Together, we are shaping a safer, smarter future for oncology services across Western Australia.
