Environmental, social and governance at Magentus Group

How we are committed to making a positive impact on the planet and society.

Magentus Group undertakes a number of initiatives directed at environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics. These matters are important for our customers, our employees, our investors and other stakeholders, and should serve as a point of reference for our suppliers.

This page provides a summary of our activities and will be updated at least annually. The content may change depending on the development of other mandatory ESG reporting to avoid duplication.

A bit about the Magentus Group

Magentus’ key divisions are:

  • Magentus – our global health business based in the UK (Magentus EMEA), and headquartered in the Asia Pacific region (Magentus APAC and Magentus Practice Management);
  • Kapish – our enterprise software and services division;
  • Citadel Technology Solutions – our integrated communications division;
  • Citadel Group – our government IT solutions division; and
  • Magentus Shared Services – the division that provides support for all our other divisions, incorporating finance, legal, governance, enterprise IT and security operations, marketing and compliance.
  • When we talk about ESG at Magentus Group, we take into account initiatives across all divisions, so at present we do not have divisional ESG statistics.

Carbon Emissions

Magentus realises it has a role to play in the reduction of carbon emissions globally.

A key part of what our Magentus and Kapish divisions do is to help customers with complex enterprise software installations (large and not so large), move to the cloud. In doing so, they can reap the significant benefits that the scale and purchasing power of key cloud providers bring compared to locally-installed and managed products, with research showing[1] that cloud computing can result in significant carbon savings compared to on-premise installations. Some of the major cloud vendors have made ambitious promises[2] regarding further environmental optimisation of their operations in the areas of renewable energy purchasing, water conservation and waste reduction.

In addition, since 2021, Magentus has conducted annual externally-reviewed carbon assessments of its own operations that seek to identify the Magentus Group’s full-scope carbon emissions. A copy of the executive summaries of the latest assessments are here: Magentus Software Limited and Magentus Group. In each year since 2021, Magentus has acquired carbon credits from quality programs sufficient to offset these emissions. You can read more about the projects we have chosen in our section headed ‘Social’.

Carbon Reduction

While carbon emissions identification and offsetting are important activities, we know that we have to do more to reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change.

The management team in Magentus APAC is preparing its first Carbon Reduction Plan, which includes its medium (2030) and long term (2050) targets. Magentus EMEA has a net zero by 2050 commitment, and has formulated a carbon reduction plan (CRP). Magentus EMEA is the lead division in a strategy to introduce a Magentus Group-wide carbon reduction plan by the end of FY25.

In the interim, we haven’t been standing still. At the end of FY22, we moved our own metered electricity consumption to 100% greenpower across our Magentus APAC physical locations. We have also factored in environmental considerations to our real estate reviews. Our Melbourne head office is located at 600 Bourke Street, with a 4.5 star NABERS energy rating and a landlord who acquires 100% greenpower for the common areas.

In 2024 we announced our employee novated leasing program for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to help our APAC employees who would like to acquire an EV or PHEV do so in a cost effective manner. Although we see this as a great employee benefit, it can also help to reduce our scope 3 emissions from employee commuting.[1] We are investigating a similar program in the EMEA region.

[1] We understand that the source of power that charges the EV is important, so we capture that data where we can from our employees also.

Waste

We are finalising our ISO14001 Environmental Management certification in Magentus APAC, and plan to expand the process across the Magentus Group in FY25.

Our Citadel technology division deals with a significant amount of packaging as part of its operations delivering, installing and upgrading unified communications products. Citadel Technology runs a comprehensive recycling program with much of the packaging and end-of-life equipment recycled professionally to preserve resources.

In our office locations, we run separated waste disposal, with recyclables and landfill collected and disposed of separately. In our head office, we also have organic waste separation supported by our building owners. We also leverage the container deposit schemes in the various locations, often donating the revenue to local charities.

Social

Diversity and Inclusion

At Magentus, we believe that diversity and inclusion are essential for our success and innovation. We value and respect the differences that make each of us unique, and we strive to create a culture where everyone feels welcome, supported, and empowered.

In 2024, Magentus developed a formal D&I strategy, building on the strong foundations of D&I practices in which the company was already engaged.  The rationale behind the strategy was Magentus’ belief that having a well-defined and measurable diversity and inclusion strategy, along with an action plan, would attract and retain talent in a competitive market.

Our strategy focused particularly on addressing pay gaps,[1] enhancing diversity in senior management and at entry level. Additionally, Magentus revisited its Employee Value Proposition (EVP) to ensure continued appeal to a diverse workforce across cultural, gender, and age spectra.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Each year Magentus Group seeks out high-quality carbon offset projects to help it meet its carbon emissions objectives. As part of our assessment, we take a close look at the co-benefits of a project, and in particular, how they align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

As a percentage of the total number of projects from which we acquired offsets, our FY23 projects contributed to the UN SDGs as set out in the table on the left.

These projects were in areas such as renewable energy, ecosystem conservation, and household devices, and were located in Brasil, Türkiye, Kenya, India, and Indonesia.

Reconciliation

Magentus Group acknowledges the traditional custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to lands, waters and communities.

As an extension of this respect, the Group has created a group-wide Reconciliation Action Plan at the ‘Reflect’ stage and will be working to deliver on its agreed activities in the coming year.

Giving back

Magentus Group’s employees are given two paid days per year to devote to charitable work of their choosing, and Magentus also organises group events for its teams. Magentus Group also holds events and fund-raising activities related to its two chosen charities – McMillan Cancer Support in EMEA, and the Starlight Children’s Foundation in APAC.

Magentus is part of SEDEX

Governance

Magentus Group understands that having quality governance processes is critical to the proper delivery of its services. As you would expect, policies, processes, training and monitoring is in place to address key governance issues such as work health and safety, anti-bribery and corruption, privacy and cyber security and regulatory compliance. We have set out in the following headings a number of key governance elements upon which we have a particular focus.

Bribery and corruption

Magentus Group operates internationally, and has a global client base, so it has a broad range of compliance obligations, including the UK Bribery Act, the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and the Australian Crimes Act. Magentus Group has a zero tolerance policy for bribery and corruption risks and trains all its personnel annually on how to identify and report actual or suspected bribery and corruption. Our Bribery, Corruption, Gifts and Hospitality policy is available on our website, and Magentus Group operates a whistleblower hotline for its employees, customers, suppliers and other interested parties to provide anonymous (if requested) reports of actual or suspected bribery or corruption, compliance failures, or instances of modern slavery.

Modern Slavery Compliance

At Magentus, we are committed to respecting human rights and preventing any form of modern slavery in our operations and supply chain. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and comply with all relevant laws and regulations regarding modern slavery, such as the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018. We have implemented policies and procedures to identify, assess, and mitigate any potential risks of modern slavery in our business activities and relationships. We also conduct regular reviews to ensure our compliance and performance.

We expect our suppliers, contractors, and business partners to share our commitment and values, and to operate in a responsible and transparent manner. We require them to comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct, which set out our expectations and requirements on human rights, labour standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption.

We believe that everyone has a role to play in combating modern slavery and promoting human rights. We encourage our employees, stakeholders, and the public to report any concerns or suspicions of modern slavery or other unethical or illegal conduct in our operations or supply chain through our confidential and anonymous whistleblower hotline, which is available 24/7 and is operated by an independent third party. We ensure that all reports are investigated promptly and thoroughly, and that appropriate actions are taken. We also protect the rights and safety of the whistleblowers and the people affected by the reported issues.
